My wife and I were robbed by two guys with 9mms before we got married.
We had no cash, which just infuriated the attackers, so they wacked me twice in the back of the head with the butt of the 9mm.. Obviously a coward, he hit me while I was looking the other way, so I did not see it coming at all. They then laid us on the floor of my carport, and I definitely thought it was the end of our lives. Truly was just about the only time in my life where I felt completely helpless, it was the most horrible feeling ever. Once you've stared down the barrell of a loaded 9mm, with a blurred image of yellow, crack-smoking eyes behind it, you'll never be the same.
You can't ever know what it's like - unless you've experienced it. I always check "my back" wherever I am, although I don't carry a weapon. EMP is 100% correct, aggression invites aggression, so if you pull out a knife or a gun you'd better know how to use it, and be ready to use it. Fact is, most people don't, even most tough guys who carry one won't know how to use it, and it'll ultimately be used against them by the attacker.
Whenever I get a new haricut I'm reminded of this event that happened in July of 96', when two scars are revealed behind my ear.
The WORST part of the whole experience was not being able to do anything to protect my wife, and the crazy thoughts that race through your head about what "could have happened". It still affects me today, 12 years later, and with two kids in tow, I hope never to have to re-experience anything like it.
It happened in a neighborhood a few blocks from Beverly Hills in an otherwise "safe" area mostly known for good restaurants and a healthy night scene.
(ps) Although I would have had no chance to use it, I had sold my Glock about a year earlier. Had I still had it in my apartment, the story may have unfolded a bit differently, and it would have been hard to write this post from a jailcell.
