A lot of the problem isn't just in the new members. It's also in the medium-new members who just flame users (even ones with legit questions) and don't give anything back.
I think most people on WF have learned a lot from it. Answering simple questions seems to me like a decent way to pay that back. Of course it will always be optional, but its just something to think about.
I think my post count qualifies me to be a medium-new member, so I'd like to respond to this...
If you attempt to apply an objective filter on something as subjective as people in a forum, you'll end up alienating some potential quality members and getting too-concerted efforts from spammers/ scammers/ ebook peddlers who will find a way in just for spite.
Since people, forums, and their interactions are implicitly subjective- it requires a subjective evaluation. Posts could be monitored and modded (perhaps a Newbie Review Mod) beyond ten- maybe even up to the initial 50- but I think going as far as 100 is just too cumbersome on already overworked mods. A test would be interesting on a trial basis, but if someone is genuinely 'new' and can't pass it- instead going to Warrior Forum or DP, they're going to come back to WF at some point in the future worse for the experience.
Context is important. It would be unjust to judge people based on 'not giving back' who reside exclusively in the domain of "Shooting the Shit". Maybe 10% of the time there is something quality that deserves a serious response. Most of it is just, well, shooting the shit. Can you penalize people for flaming one another when posting in an anything-goes space? W/r/t the other forums- Affiliate Marketing, SEO, etc... all of that is fair game and one-word/ unintelligent/ flaming replies clutter threads and make it harder to get the wheat from the chaff.
As a medium-new member- I lurk much more often than I post. But where there is something I can contribute... I do. Legal issues, especially around trademark/ patent/ copyright things I have experience in. PPC/ PPV/ Media Buying I bite my tongue. There are others here with a lot more experience and I simply haven't earned my stripes enough to make a comment. For this reason, Wickedfire is an immeasurable resource to get realtime actionable information from people with that knowledge base.
Especially as a new or medium-new member.
