They're "wealthy" by Mexican standards ... hell by world standards. They have acreage, multiple homes, and a few businesses. The Zeta's wanted it, and sadly they got it. They abducted my GF's uncle, really nice guy, always welcomed me like I was one of the clan. Anyway he was held for ransom. His wife didn't know what to do so she met their demands. Turned over land, homes, and businesses. They found him 7 days later, head missing in a mass grave.
You can't go to the cops, they're corrupted and the citizens are afraid for their life so they won't fight back. It's really fucked up down there. Then you have our government giving them weapons and shit.
I'm not gonna go into details on the second one but have you ever had a loved one tortured in front of you, in your own home, then when you do give in to their demands they cut off his head anyway and leave? While you and your children watch...

That is fucked up. How is the family doing now? Did they have to give everything up? If I was in their situation and still had a meaningful amount of capital, I would spend every last dime I had to contract some serious "liquidators" to wreak havoc on their asses. Motherfuckers would be looking over their shoulder for the rest of their lives.
This was just last year. The family is getting by as much as anyone who had a family member murdered in front of their eyes. Weird question bro. They have a single ranch left, no cash. They aren't vengeful people, and the cartel is just way too powerful to fight for one person. You touch one of them and their friends kill your entire family lineage. Not people you want to grudge on exactly. It's systemic and the people who do care and try to do something end up dead.

Since we left Mexico, I told my drug taking friends what kind of people they are funding, and the kinds of things that happen because of it. Babies are being shot in the head. It sounds so absurd, but it is completely true. 8 year old girls are being intentionally and brutally killed. People are so revoltingly, disgustingly selfish and uncaring.

Drugs are both Hard to get (because they're illegal) and Addictive.
When a junkie or even casual user goes to find some, there is no store they can walk into and say: "I think I'll try this free-trade cocaine this week..."
No, he's stuck with whatever the fuck he can find. -And he can't quit altogether because it's fucking addictive!
Some might then think it's up to the dealer to choose drugs from a better source too; but seriously, 100% of the time the dealer is going to act the same way the buyer does and take what he can get... Because they too don't have a lot of choices.
Even if they did know multiple suppliers, here in North America at least, the cheapest stuff by far is sourced through the mexican cartels... Who literally have a monopoly on north american drug addiction. (And don't take kindly to pushers stopping service.)

wow its crazy has fast a country can decay from a few corrupt politicians. I remember hearing about the political corruption with mexican drug cartels less than 10 years ago. The politicians didn't think it was a big deal to profiteer from it and in return still try to deny the existence of these cartels. From there it lead into police corruption which lead into massive growth of these operations in a very short amount of time. Now the country is in ruin and no one can stop it. I don't blame them for not wanting the US in there either. We have a nice track record of never leaving a country once we occupy it, and best yet we'll rape the country for resources for the rest of it's existence. In a lot of ways we're worse than the cartels. The real scary will come when these drug cartels have enough money and power to pay off US banks (apparently already happened with BOA). Once they have the banks in thier pockets that means they'll also have our politicians who already do whatever the banks tell them.

So basically the Cartels are now somewhat in control of the US Government because they influence our big banks which everyone knows is fully in control of the US Government.

to put things in perspective, the city of merida on the yucatan peninsula has a crime rate comparable to that of montana or wyoming. im sure neighboring places like cancun are not far off
and to the person who said mexico has no oil, on the contrary they have a ton of it. however, they kicked out the oil companies so its all nationalized. i believe gas prices are lower in mex than the US
