There are a few things missing from the homepage design.

Feel free to add these.

ATTENTION
there is no such thing as web2.0 anymore.
its just the web. and your site has failed.

Well, web 2.0 is actually defined by interactivity / user driven content, not design."

thank you emp once again for your top advice, i will redesign the site and change the background and the font styles and the buttons

i have goog ads because i need some more revenue from them, i have about 50% of a payout sitting there i think ill remove them though.
Other than that the site was an experiment, teaching myself jquery as i went along good luck seeing a site with panels sliding out like that back in the mid 90's... as for 2advanced.com, that is a flash site, my whole point is that 90% of the site was javascript not flash ie spiderable content.
as for putting my phone number up, dude i live in australia, im not interested in people calling me in the middle of the night.

building some templates and some pages was my next thing,

so should i keep that layout o go back to a standard layout?
ie: menu bar on the left, nav at the top?
I like the funcionality of the site, that is what i was going for, but if it is not what i need then ill do something better.

You need to get one of those counters for the bottom of the site so people can see how many visitors your site has had.

Lots of good input here. Have you considered using the eyecandy photoshop plugin to make it look like your text is on fire? Hot stuff...ditto on the visitor counter and I recommend using the "Comic MS" font, at least 20-point size.

Needs more cowbell.

Some midi tunes that autoplay. Everyone likes music.

well i would much rather some music then those fucking automated salesmen that are on every other affiliate landing page, at least some good music is enjoyable!

ok, have reworked the site a bit, removed those demos, added some better categories (content to come!) and buttons can we pretend i never had adcents on there?
As for the chat widget, what's wrong with it, if someone wants to talk to me, they can skype me when im online, chat if they dont have skype or email me to set up a time. it's all about interactivity isnt it?

do you guys think i need to go back to a more traditional layout? (of which there are plenty of designers sites like that out there) I will rework that header tomorrow and
get some content and themes up there..
am i heading in the right direction or do i need to scrap and start again???

First things first!

Cut out the portion of your brain that thinks cheesy 3D effects and marble backgrounds are cool.
Also cauterize the part that goes "WOW! Lensflares!". Yes, you have that part, I know it, and so do you.

Then, Take a notepad and surf. Surf design websites, web 2.0 websites, modern websites, modern websites and modern websites.

Take notes, make doodles, scribble.

THEN sit down and sketch, on paper, a website design.

THEN code and design.

urghs...yeah....... about your question? Scrap it.

Forget everyone talking about the 'retro' design, ignore them and concentrate on your content. You've got a split infinitive here:
Web 2.0 Is a very difficult term to precisely define.
Iron this out and you're on your way.

I actually think it looks marginally better, but it still has a way to go. you have to get rid of the cheesy graphics. no water background image. and the text for the logo, as it is now, would look better if you just had large header text. make it more simple and elegant and less... crappy.

the navigation also bugs me. put it either on the right side or horizontally below the header. good usability dictates that it's unwise to go against accepted design conventions, as it will confuse your users and make them want to click back.

speaking of clicking back, your site only has one page. people want to be able to click forward and back, and should be able to do so when clicking on your different links. as it is now, they will click back to get back to where they were, and they will unexpectedly leave your page.
