Wow so fucking glad I live in a country where I don't have to worry about shit like this

Europe FTW

Never leave home with out this little mama. standard 9mm - 10 round capacity. but i am a big believer in non lethal. if someone is not presenting a deadly threat, do not react with one. carry a mace if you're going to carry a lethal weapon. should you ever have to stop a threat with deadly force, having a non lethal on your person will only benefit you should you have to appear in court.

Man, if you haven't already done this....if your going to carry a gun you should take some ECQC classes. You combine this with Jiu-Jitsu, and you have a winner.

Here is an example the type of scenarios you learn. You use semunitions that shoot chalk rounds...its like getting hit with a paintball that hurts more.....it adds some realism that is safe.

Its one thing to know how to shoot a still target while your calm, its another thing to shoot a target while your heart rate is 170, your afraid of getting sht and your opponent is moving or fighting back.

10 feet walk other way
5 feet back away
2 feet or less (how the fuck did you let him get so close?) and you are in a corner, grab wrist and elbow and try to put his elbow higher than his wrist. Step on one of his feet and push to put him off balance. Then run. Always run.

The rules change a LOT when you have young kids with you. It's harder to run away AND you get adrenalin rush HARD if your 3 year little girl is with you and some bum starts getting violent. I remember one time some street guy nearly ran over my kids with a bicycle (on the sidewalk) and it felt like electricity was running through my body.

Before I had kids, some guy could take a run at me and I could almost laugh at it.

Thanks guys for reminding me why I pay a LOT of money to live with my family in a nice family oriented neighbourhood.

Hi,

While I don't know much about IM yet, I do know a decent bit about different martial arts. Especially for self defense.

I would really suggest you look into a style like Hapkido. As a beginner it gives you the basic striking, wrist techniques, and throws to make it viable for you to defend yourself within a few months. You don't need a hammer, whip, paddle or otherwise, unless you are on a date.

Aikido is absolutely phenomenal as a martial art, but it takes about 10-15 years to get decent enough at to really use it in a situation (based on practitioners I've met).

Tai Chi is one of the most difficult styles to study as a self defense style, but its awesome, they have self defense and build up leg strength that I could shrug off a thai kick right to the thigh without flinching.

I studied a bit of Krav Maga, and its an excellent combat style. Combat, in my opinion, is not quite the same as self defense. Most of their techniques are basic techniques to execute aimed at maiming/killing an opponent. Yes, you can scale them down, but its hard to scale down an elbow to the throat or a ripped off lip.

I like Hapkido specifically because there are strikes incorporated with Jiu Jitsu and Aikido techniques. They focus more on self defense control and submission (standing, not mma) techniques than killing/crippling someone. Unless that was just the way I was taught.

DISCLAIMER: Every style is good, depending on whose executing. Most martial arts are viable. I've studied Hapkido, Aikido, Judo, Jui Juitsu, (some) Krav Maga, Tai Chi, Capoeira. I worked from 18-26 as a Bouncer.

i'm actually considering buying a taser. i have guns, but i like the idea of that kind of stopping power without being lethal.

Ahhh, the smell of testosterone.

The bad thing about it? It makes you act like a frigging idiot.

Even if (this being an internet forum --> IF <-- you know how to fight, avoid fights at all costs.

I did a lot of Martial Arts - Karate, Aikido, Capoeira, etc.. and still the best advice you get by any trainer who is worth his salt is "If you can, RUN!"

A fight is often decided on random events, even a stoned out junkie can land a lucky blow against a trained opponent. If he is brandishing a knife, that's it.

If you can, RUN!

Only fight if there is no way out.

Your friend did the exact right thing and went from the situation to where he could get help / public attention.

I know this advice is gonna make me sound like a pussy, but I don't care.
Martial Artists get hurt in street fights, Guns and other weapons are often used against the one bringing them to the fight in the first place.
Actually using a weapon might get you into a lot more trouble than the situation is worth.

If you can, RUN!

The statistical probability for a permitted CCW holder in the USA to have a gun turned on them is less than 1%. There is a 99% chance for them to have a favorable outcome.

here is my rules - you come at me fast, i shoot you. you come on my property, i shoot you. you come near my family, i shoot you. all in the heart or the head, away from my home glock 9. at home is a sawed off shot gun. already had to re drywall twice this year because of two false alarms. i dont fuck around with fighting or weapons.

Very true, my mom...who was an aerobics instructor and personal trainer all her life, is an asskicker amongst women, meaning when she got in fights with girls, she beat the crap out of them. Not slapping and scratching, my mom threw straight punches and left hooks when she fought. Now, I say this not to "brag" or make her look tuff...but to show that she was no frail, defenseless women.

Now, when I was two years old, she was kidnapped by a man posing to be a police officer and he was only 135 lbs. She did exactly what all these bullshit self defense people say, when he grabbed her to throw her in his truck...she grabbed his balls with an iron grip, she said...and squeezed as hard as he could to get him to release his grip.

All he did was reach into his truck, grab a police flash light and smash it into her head. She woke up, some time later, with him trying to stick her with a needle. She started fighting him again and BAM! Flashlight to the head.

The next time she woke up, he had his hands on her throat with her head in his lap. Her hands were tied and she was bloody, beaten and out of it. She was praying, afraid and was terrified that he was going to rape her and then kill her.

All she was thinking about was me growing up with out a mom and she was so afraid of the pain he was going to cause her before he killed her and she was praying to God that they would just get into a wreck before they got where they were going.

And thats when she realized it. A WRECK!!! As she thought this in her head, she went to move her hands and either the ropes were already loose, or they became unloose or God himself untied her...whatever the case...she was able to slip her hands out and reach up and yank on the steering wheel.

He took his hand off of her throat to regain control of steering wheel and she sat up to reach for the door handle. NOPE, he had it removed on the inside...she goes for the window, all the while hes cussing at her "GET YOUR ASS BACK OVER HERE, YOU CUNT!"

My mom, crying and screaming is kicking this guy in the face and arms trying to roll this window down, but he also had the knob removed so she can barely do it. Eventually she gets it down and she rolls out of the window hitting the ground doing 30-50mph, rolling end over end, hitting rocks and concrete, as she tumbles to a bloody halt.

The asshole drives away, as she is hobbling down I-45, bloody and crying for help (in broad day light mind you) as cars just drive past...too busy with their life or too late for work to stop and help.

Luckily a security guard from across the street sees her and comes to her rescue. They never found the asshole (and I wish they would, Id commit a crime just to get locked in the same cell as him), but this did happen on the same stretch of high way as the famous "Killing Fields" on calder and I-45 in Houston and they think she might of been one of 2 or 3 women that got a way. All describe similar situations of this guy posing as a cop. The unlucky ones were raped, tortured and killed and then dumped in a field now famously called "the killing fields".

Back to original point...even strong women are rarely a match for a determined man. We are just built differently...and this guy was only 135lbs...imagine if he was 205.

if for true. . . . . damn

I'm a big believer in non lethals and my roundhouse kick is an obvious first reaction to knife fighters. The half/full guard also gives you a lot of options when rolling around with a hot dude (hoyce gracie).

LMAO! I hope you don't have a cat. God forbid it knocks over something at night. BOOM!

No offense, but you're a little (REALLY, REALLY, REALLY) on edge to shoot before you see anything. Actually, you just sound full of shit...

I'm a grown man. I've already outgrown the ego fights with drunks and whatnot. If I seriously can't avoid being attacked and leaving doesn't work or isn't possible (because god knows I'm not attacking anyone) I'm going to kill them. Period. I'm not trying to "defend myself". I'm trying to not die.

IF and only IF I ever need to draw my weapon I think that'll be the only deterrent I need.

Sounds like you're a big believer in not surviving if you think BJJ is going to save you from a knife. lol

Monetize

i doubt you'd have to shoot him. Just pulling out a .45 magnum alone is enough to make most people kiss your feet. If he doesn't start firing at his feet and make him dance for a bit. Fuck, record it and upload to youtube = profit

I smell a "learn to dance" info product

BJJ is only good for close contact grinding with men - more of a hobby than a defense. I believe I made referance to the art of roundhouse kicking knife fighters?

All jokes aside - If you are going to carry a gun, you should carry a mase as well. Not going to jail after defending myself is defiantly attractive. The attempted use or the presence (shows your not "out to kill) of non lethals during a self defense shooting is a plus. The purpose of a concealed weapon is to bring a sense of peace and provide you a chance to protect yourself/loved ones should a threat present itself. Now, I hope and pray that I never have to use any type of weapon on anyone for any reason, but if I do find myself in a situation where I had to drop 2 shots center mass then so be it. The goal is to stay safe and out of jail. After a self defense shooting a misuse of words during questioning can get you jail time. I like being alive and I like my freedom.
