What's Your Religion & How Into It Are You?

Raised Catholic but disagree with a lot of their teachings.

I believe all religions, depending on their practices, are correct. We are all praying to the same God. If there IS a God... God would be just/smart/righteous enough that:
  • going to Church every Sunday doesn't matter
  • praying to Allah every day isn't important
  • pre-marital sex is just a guideline
  • the list goes on...
If there is a God, I believe you won't be judged on whether or not you are the correct religion. You will be judged on whether or not you are a good person.

Are you a good person?

If there is a God, I believe that being a good person is all God would really care about. A good Athiest, even though a disbeliever, should go to a Catholic person's heaven.

I don't really care what other people think. I am a "the glass is half full" type of person. If I am wrong, so be it. If I am right, I hope to see you in heaven. But either way, I will live my life trying to be the best person I can be.

Regardless of religion, you can't argue with morals and values. As long as your religion aims to make you a better person, in general terms, than I would gladly support you in your religious beliefs.

I am Jewish and I'm a greedy fucking bastard who is ready to fuck everyone out of their money. (I am Jewish so I am allowed say these things)

Happy belated Purim to all the Jews!

Jewish here too! Happy Purim John, i take it you didn't dress up.

I'm modern orthodox as well, and i practice to some extent. Would like to get more involved, but it's challenging. My bro is hardcore and studies in a Yeshiva in Israel, he's been there for 4 years. He's gonna be a pretty big Rabbi one day..

yeah. I'm not ashamed to admit it now or ever. I know I'm outnumbered on this board, but I don't care. I am, who I am. But, I'm not going to sit here and judge any atheist or any other religion for that matter. I find as long as I worry about myself I lead a better life.

I'm in the same boat - Roman Catholic and attend every week :)

If anyone gets a chance, you should try listening to The Daily Breakfast. Whatever your religion is, I'm pretty confident you'll enjoy it... check it out:

Raised Orthodox Jewish, but managed to avoid learning anything hahah.

Now a Humanist.
It's like an atheist, but without the arseholeishness :D Seriously though, it's basically a belief that the people around you are the only embodiment of both the divine & the damned, there is no after life, and there are no powers outside our own to help us... But people alone can be an immensely powerful force.
I guess it's more of a philosophical than a religious belief.

Considering that jews are meant to be a bit under 0.3% of the population, does anyone else think the number here is slightly skewed here?

Also to expound on your later questions...

I do keep shabbos (I'm shomer fucking shabbos) and i keep Kosher as well.

I grew up in a non-religious household, but my parents split and my mom became orthodox when she remarried when i was 4 and my dad stayed non religious (he's actually an atheist and very anti-religion).

So i actually kept shabbos and kosher and all that stuff with my mom, but not with my dad. So i got both worlds. When i was 14 i decided i wanted to be orthodox (at least modern orthodox) and besides for a few stints of rebelliousness in high school i have kept shabbos and Kosher since.

So it was a choice, not forced on me. Although i did go to Jewish day schools and all that.

So yeah, unfortunately i can't check my campaigns over friday night/ saturday. There have been a few times i turned on the computer after shabbos ended only to see a link was down all day. But haven't been burned that bad yet....

Haha - awesome, a true Aryan.

I have told hundreds of people that, and I swear, less than 10 understand the joke or know what an Aryan is..

My aunt is an Aryan Jew ( an indian aryan, if you know what i mean )

Her ancestors moved from Israel or w.e to Kerela in Southern India 600 years back and they somehow mixed with the local Aryan population here and there.

So, she's an Aryan + Jew.

LOL...

Funny how "no one is gonna force their religion on you if you are atheist" came up here.
The times religion was being forced on me, urghs, too many to count.

And by the way, not all atheists are grumpy assholes.

Just me.

And just to religious people.

:D:D:D:D:D:D

Really, sometimes I just like to push buttons. 2 groups easiest to do this with: Apple fan boys and Christians.
You say one little thing like "no ghosts" and they rain hellfire on your sorry ass.

I'm Buddhist...

and practice a form of Tantric Vajrayana if you want to get specific...

most mainstream Buddhists would likely consider me a heretic...

LOL...

Amen.

You won't find me grumpy unless you start going wacko on me with your fairytales. Keep your religion in your pants where it belongs.

Like 90% of Scandinavians, I was baptized at birth in the Lutheran protestant church.

I don't go to church or anything but I did read my share of the bible as part of religious education in junior high. I guess I share a lot of the views trigatch4 said. I believe in God, and that everyone is right in believing in their own God.

In the end it's all about morals and respect for one another (group hug anyone?). No God intended for people to kill each other while fighting over belief/disbelief.

Evil is bad....mmkay?

Just because I'm atheist doesn't mean:
a) I have no morals (there are plenty of products/services I refuse to promote)
b) I look down my nose at people who are religious
c) I believe everything Dawkins says (he's a squirrel loving twat)

Happy birthday Jon, btw.

anyway, orthodox jewish - but you knew that already. Didn't grow up that way but I'm happy where I am now. I try not to give myself a label, but I'm too right in thinking to be modern, if not in practice...

Purim was awesome - any holiday where the mitzva is to drink until beyond comprehension is a good thing.

Oh yeah, I'm living the dream - in Israel :-)

Yes.

Being an atheist means you can also choose an ethical/moral/philosophical standpoint. Humanism, for example.

another muslim here. also avoid anything related to gambling and porn.

i have also noticed a correlation myself between feeling close to God, feeling gratefulness and wealth.

something i've noticed about atheists in general, is the idea of 'god' they don't believe in is a very primitive & simplistic god. a man in the sky. a ghost. some supernatural creature. i don't believe in that 'god' either.

also
my prayers benefit myself. i don't prostrate myself to God to 'stroke his ego'. if it's for anyone's' ego, it's my own. to remember my existence is wholly dependent on His. to remember there is more to life then what is seen.
