Good thing this guy wasn't black...

A friend of mine is an acquaintance of the father. Yes, the story goes more deeply. No, I won't share details.

Rampant police misconduct* stems from the fact that there is no competition. Police forces do not have customers for whom they must compete with other police agencies. Walmart, Target, Kohl's, et al. practically fall over themselves to cater to us. Police do not. Police harass, beat, and murder, often with impunity.

The only time a murderous thug-with-a-badge is brought up on charges is when an incident becomes a PR disaster for the department. Otherwise, the guy is put behind a desk for a few days to cool his heels, or given a paid vacation.

* Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and you get the point, but there's much more here

Sadly I had never watched the video and prejudged the situation from media reports and commentary.

I would not be surprised if the cops are found innocent. The guy was totally uncooperative, every yell and scream was met with contrary action. He would yell, say alright man, then yell and then say ok then sorry I will, then yell etc - typical BS I have encountered with crazy people.

They all know to yell and scream and yet fight you every step of the way. They never had him under control. Why you ask? Because they are subduing a suspect while making every attempt not to swap bodily fluids, get bitten, scratched etc.

Have you ever had to take someone down and at the same time not get scratched, bitten, spit on, etc - especially a smelly dirty homeless person? It's nasty work, you do everything you can to make certain they do not infect you with some disease.

The guy did not deserve to get beaten beyond recognition. He did not deserve to die. But he played the "tough guy" against the cops and lost. Maybe because he's schizo - but still, you do not enter that realm without taking risk. Especially in The OC where you know its not safe and the public does not want you

Are you really justifying the 6 cops beating him until he chokes on his own blood, breaking his ribs, AND tazing him at the same time. WHILE they all had him on the ground under their knees. He DID NOT play the tough guy against the cop at all.

You should really watch the video, when the cop asked him to put his hands behind his back he said "He can't", because he was suffocating. The only guy that played the tough guy was the first cop that put on his gloves and said he was gonna basically beat the armless, homeless guy up.

Yeah, have you ever been fucking punched in the nose over and over while some one is twisting your arm as hard as he fucking can, dropping knees into your ribs...telling you to be STILL. Are you fucking kidding me? I would instinctively defend and move to alleviate the pain as well. How about while your getting tased for 15-30 second intervals...who the fuck does that? It doesn't take that long.

Lets not kid ourselves, those fucking cops were trying to hurt him...there is no question about it. ESPECIALLY when it first started. They wanted every movement to hurt and they were dragging it out.

Fine, I totally agree officers have to APPROACH situations like that...but there is a point where you turn it off and start acting like a damn police officer.

and what are we supposed to do with them when they decide they do not want to take their meds? Let them do whatever they want and give them a free pass? That's BS.

Same as anybody else, if they commit a crime arrest them.

This guy was just sitting on a bench when the cop walked up and told him he was gonna fuck him up. If the guy had already done something to warrant his arrest then all the cop had to do was arrest him. You can't tell a guy to relax and put his hands behind his back when multiple cops are on top of him and beating his ass. It's physically impossible.

Fucking saddest thing I've seen in a long time.

The US police are a bunch of unfit/undertrained fatasses that get easily overpowered when they are dealing with someone that is remotely fit, so they resort to tasers, guns and every weapon they can get their hands on to make up for their lack of physical strength/stamina/skill.

In many other countries, police officers are highly trained in martial arts and know how to submit somebody very quickly, without the use of any weapon.

The US should take 0.X% off the military budget to properly train the various police departments. The police are more dangerous to the population than Ben Laden right now.

Schizophrenics are a real problem in society, They are allowed to run around, do crazy things, harass people all of the time and never have any accountability.

Saw one throw a jar at a grocery clerk in Riverside the other day. The next day she still gets to wander around saying and doing whatever she wants.

Yet - the police, their job is to use minimal required force - or one level of force above what is delivered to them. Clearly these guys deserve no mercy.

What would have happened if that jar hit the clerk and she had brain damage? Nothing to the Schizophrenic. So there is an underlying problem that exists - what do you do with these people?

His Dad is the biggest "After-The-Fact-And-Now-I-Care-Jerk". Let his kid wander around as a major nuisance. Knowing that this is the type of stuff that happens. Just not usually from Cops - usually from Gang memebrs or other deviants.
Dangerous mentally ill people should be sectioned until they are no longer a threat to society. Sure, it costs money, but benefits everyone.

Are you guys aware such things are VERY common in 3rd world countries? Shit happens but still US is 100 times better than any 3rd world country where cops/government have lot of abusive powers.

There is nothing in particular to blame the US cops for this. Such incidents are very very rare. Media gives more attention to the negative sides.

I would have to say no on this. The military trains to kill people really. From the start they were messing with this guy. Sure he was being a jerk, but you don't need to beat him like that.

Spray some pepper into his face, grab his hand start the cuffing... this is not hard. They called for backup because they did'nt want to break a sweat.

These are the same types who would call for backup if some woman was hitting on her man.

Are they? I don't think so and I do have some knowledge about 3rd world countries.

That's just a fucking lame excuse for this barbaric actions of the US police. This shit ain't normal, or rare, or acceptable or anything. This is murder and should be treated as such.

I don't know man, the media can only show what someone HAPPENS to record. I don't think all cops are like this at all. I know and train jiu-jitsu with a LOT of cops.

I get they gotta deal with a lot of dick heads and people that would kill them in a heart beat. Some people can handle the power and balance the necessary aggression and others can't...and when they can't...they don't usually snap once..that becomes who they are.

The OP is not some sensational newspaper article, it's an actual video showing what happened. The media has nothing to do with this. We can clearly see that the cops acted like fucking animals in the video.

In 3rd world countries you might see cops shooting people or arresting somebody without any factual proof, but you'd never see cops beating up/tasering some homeless man to death. That's something I've only seen in the US.

I'd rather take a bullet in the head than getting the same treatment as this poor man.

there is a good chance his son was homeless by choice. Who knows how many times he tried to intervene and get him into hospitals etc before this happened.

This story aside - Mental health is just a fucked up situation in general. In terms of community level mental health <--This is one of the biggest areas where "the system" fails because these people do end up homeless and addicted to werid shit beggin for money. Then you have those that choose to be out in the shit living the degenerate life ....

At least a few of these fuckers are being charged with murder. Shit like this happens all the time and normally they are just suspended for a few weeks with pay.

Are people just finding out about this today?

It's weird being a libertarian- you always know about this shit when it happens and no one cares, even when you talk about it. Then like a year later, occasionally a story will get more life and a few liberals might take notice.

Reason and Radley Balko and all the libertarian media/thinktanks have been talking about this shit for years and this case specifically has been around awhile. That said, it is GOOD when more people are aware of this shit.

You mostly have it right. They usually receive medals/awards, too.

Not all the cops are bad.
Americans dont understand what its like to live without cops. When you cant call for help. Yeah its not perfect, but I sure as heck dont want to raise my kids elsewhere.
Many well-educated, intelligent Americans believe in NEVER calling the police or cooperating with them, for many reasons.
