This is completely off topic, but kinda interesting how people choose to define their nationality based on where their ancestors came from, rather than where they were born or brought up.

How far back do you go? I'm guessing most Americans go back to whoever emigrated there and not any further. How do you judge 'over half'? One parent born in Ireland (for example) and 100% descended from people of 100% Irish descent (can anyone ever know that?) plus a bit more somewhere? Or is it just self-perception?

Maybe it's interesting to me as it isn't as common here in the "old world" as it is in the newer countries except with immigrants. But then maybe a lot of Americans still see themselves as immigrants? There aren't many people with ancestry 100% native to America around are there?

Fuck knows. I've got Scottish and German ancestors, prob some others too and go back far enough and we all came from Africa. But I don't see myself as African either (or Scottish, German, etc) so maybe perception is more important than genetics?
 


I'm from the UK and a lot of areas are pretty rough round here. I make sure I carry a knife round my neck at all times.

And to reply to an earlier post as to why we don't carry guns over knifes... a knife will get taken off someone down here if you get caught, whereas if you get caught with a gun you're pretty much done for.

Being a carrotopper myself, I've got a a bit of a thing for the Irish & Scottish girls... although interestingly enough, my red hair comes from recessive genes WAY back in my family's semitic history.

LazyHippy: Yeah, that one really irritates me. In Australia, there are heaps of teens and young adults who claim to be Greek & Lebanese, even though they were born here and never stepped off Australian soil...
It's like when people find out my parents religion "Oh, so you're a jew?" "err, no, I'm a fuckin' Aussie... MATE!"
That said, we have a documented family tree (used to be on paper, now we have a 3D model of it, kinda cool actually) that goes back to about 1300AD... We got ancestors EVERYWHERE! I even have some Chinese heritage in me apparently...
